Xcaret

Grupo Xcaret

Full day45 min from PDC from PDC

Mexico’s premier eco-archaeological park combining nature, culture, and adventure. Explore underground rivers, snorkel in a natural coral reef aquarium, walk through a butterfly pavilion, and end the night with the spectacular ‘Mexico Espectacular’ show.

Xcaret is widely considered the crown jewel of eco-parks in the Riviera Maya. Located just 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen along Highway 307, this sprawling park blends natural wonders with Mexican culture in a way no other attraction in the region can match. Whether you are visiting Playa del Carmen for the first time or returning for another trip, Xcaret deserves a full day on your itinerary.

The park is built around a network of underground rivers that flow through limestone caverns before emptying into the Caribbean Sea. Swimming through these rivers is one of the most unique experiences available anywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula. You will float through partially lit caves, past stalactites, and into open-air sections where the jungle canopy towers above. Life jackets are provided and the current does most of the work, making it accessible for all skill levels.

Beyond the rivers, Xcaret offers a natural coral reef aquarium for snorkeling, a massive butterfly pavilion housing over 20 native species, a sea turtle conservation program, an aviary, a jaguar island, and a regional aquarium. The park takes conservation seriously — its sea turtle release program has returned thousands of hatchlings to the ocean since the 1990s.

The evening highlight is the Mexico Espectacular show, a 90-minute performance tracing Mexican history from pre-Hispanic civilizations through the modern era. It features over 300 performers, traditional music, elaborate costumes, and a thrilling charreada sequence. Arrive early to get good seats in the open-air theater.

Pricing starts at $119 USD for adults and $59 for children ages 5 to 11. Booking online at least 21 days in advance through the official Xcaret website typically saves 10 to 15 percent. The basic ticket covers all park activities, shows, and the underground rivers. Food and drinks are not included in the standard admission — expect to spend an additional $30 to $50 on meals unless you upgrade to an all-inclusive package.

To get to Xcaret from Playa del Carmen, you can take a colectivo van from Calle 2 for around 40 pesos, drive south on Highway 307, or book the park's own shuttle service. The drive takes about 45 minutes. Arrive when the park opens at 8:30 AM to maximize your time and avoid the midday crowds that build after tour buses arrive from Cancun around 10 AM.

For the best experience, wear comfortable water shoes, bring biodegradable sunscreen, and plan to stay until after dark for the Mexico Espectacular show. Xcaret is not just a theme park — it is an all-day immersion into the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Yucatan that consistently ranks among the top attractions in all of Mexico.
