One of the most popular cenotes near Tulum and part of the Sac Aktun cave system — the world’s largest underwater cave network. Crystal-clear water, stalactites, and resident turtles make it a must-visit.

Gran Cenote is one of the most popular and accessible cenotes near Tulum, attracting visitors with its crystal-clear water, resident freshwater turtles, and beautiful cave formations. Located just 4 kilometers west of Tulum town on the road to Cobá, this cenote is part of the Sac Aktun cave system — the world’s largest known underwater cave network.

The cenote features a large open swimming area connected to partially submerged caves with impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. The water clarity is exceptional, often exceeding 30 meters of visibility, and the shallow areas near the entrance are warm and inviting. Wooden walkways and platforms provide easy access to multiple swimming and snorkeling entry points.

Snorkeling at Gran Cenote is a highlight of any Riviera Maya trip. The clear water reveals every detail of the limestone formations, and the resident freshwater turtles are remarkably comfortable around swimmers. You will frequently spot turtles surfacing for air just meters away. Bring an underwater camera — the photo opportunities are outstanding.

For certified divers, Gran Cenote offers access to the cavern zone of the Sac Aktun system. Guided cavern dives take you through flooded passages decorated with ancient formations. The experience is otherworldly and ranks among the best cenote dives in the region. Several dive operators in Tulum offer Gran Cenote packages.

Entry costs 500 MXN (approximately $27 USD) per person, making it one of the pricier cenotes in the area. However, the well-maintained facilities, including clean changing rooms, lockers, gear rental, and a small cafe, justify the cost. Importantly, Gran Cenote is cash only with no ATM on-site, so bring enough pesos for entry and any rentals.

The cenote opens at 8:10 AM and the best strategy is to arrive right at opening. By 10 AM, tour groups from Playa del Carmen and Cancún begin arriving and the experience becomes significantly more crowded. Early visitors enjoy peaceful swimming, better underwater visibility, and the beautiful morning light filtering into the cave areas.

Gran Cenote pairs perfectly with a visit to the Tulum archaeological zone or a morning at Tulum beach. From Playa del Carmen, the drive takes about an hour south on Highway 307 and then west toward Cobá.
