A hidden open cenote in the jungle village of Chemuyil, meaning ‘Goddess of Water’ in Mayan. Part of the world’s 7th-longest underwater cave system with crystal-clear turquoise water and abundant fish.

Cenote Xunaan-Ha is a hidden jungle gem in the small village of Chemuyil, about 40 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen. The name means Goddess of Water in Mayan, and the cenote lives up to its divine title with crystal-clear turquoise water, abundant fish, and a peaceful atmosphere untouched by the mass tourism that characterizes more popular cenotes.

This open-air cenote is part of the world’s seventh-longest underwater cave system, making it a significant site for both casual swimmers and certified divers. The pool is large enough for comfortable swimming with visibility that lets you see straight to the bottom. Fish dart through the water, and the surrounding jungle provides natural shade and a soundtrack of birdsong.

The experience at Xunaan-Ha is decidedly rustic. Facilities are minimal — a small palapa for shade, basic changing areas, and not much else. The 300-meter access road is unpaved and bumpy, keeping many casual tourists away. This is part of the appeal for travelers who seek authentic, uncrowded cenote experiences over manicured tourist parks.

Diving at Xunaan-Ha offers access to the connected cave system, with passages that trained cave divers can explore. The underwater formations are impressive, and the relative obscurity of the site means you are unlikely to encounter other dive groups. Contact dive operators in Playa del Carmen or Tulum for guided cave diving at this cenote.

Entry costs 200 MXN (approximately $11 USD) per person, and a life jacket is included. Bring your own snorkeling gear if you want to explore underwater, as rentals are not reliably available. Cash is the only accepted payment method.

Cenote Xunaan-Ha is best for adventurous travelers who value authenticity over convenience. If you have rented a car and want to escape the crowds, this cenote rewards the effort of finding it. Pair it with a visit to nearby Xel-Há or the cenotes along Highway 307 for a full day of exploration.
