An urban cenote in the La Guadalupana neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, located within a public park. Connected to the Cenote de Playa Azul underground system. Subject to community cleanup efforts.

Cenote de la Guadalupana is an urban cenote located in the La Guadalupana neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, within the public space of Parque Bicentenario. Connected to the Cenote de Playa Azul underground system, this community cenote represents the intersection of urban development and natural heritage in one of Mexico’s fastest-growing cities.

This is not a tourist cenote with facilities, guided tours, or swimming access. It is a natural sinkhole within a neighborhood park, preserved through the efforts of local community groups who recognized its ecological importance. The cenote provides a visible connection to the underground aquifer that flows beneath all of Playa del Carmen.

Community cleanup and preservation efforts have been ongoing at Cenote de la Guadalupana, reflecting a growing awareness among Playa del Carmen residents about the importance of protecting these natural features. Urban development, waste water, and construction threaten the underground water system, and cenotes like this one serve as visible reminders of what is at stake.

Visiting the cenote is free and the park is accessible during daylight hours. There are no facilities specifically for the cenote — it is simply a feature within the larger park. The surrounding neighborhood of La Guadalupana offers a look at everyday life in Playa del Carmen beyond the tourist zones of 5th Avenue and the beach.

Cenote de la Guadalupana is recommended for visitors with an interest in urban ecology, community conservation, or the geology of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is about 4 kilometers from the city center and is most easily reached by taxi or bicycle. Visit during daytime hours and be respectful of the residential neighborhood surrounding the park.
