Cenote Dos Ojos, meaning Two Eyes, is one of the most famous cenote systems in the world. Named for its two connected sinkholes that resemble a pair of eyes when viewed from above, this cenote near Tulum provides access to one of the longest explored underwater cave systems on Earth. For divers and adventurous snorkelers, it is an absolute must-visit.
The Dos Ojos system has been explored to over 80 kilometers of mapped passages, making it one of the most extensive underwater cave networks ever documented. The two main cenotes — the East Eye and the West Eye — offer different experiences. The East Eye is popular for snorkeling with its shallow areas and excellent visibility. The West Eye leads to the famous Bat Cave, home to a colony of bats and some of the most impressive stalactite formations in the Yucatán.
The Bat Cave tour is the signature experience at Dos Ojos. Guided groups swim through a dark cave passage illuminated only by waterproof flashlights, past enormous stalactites and through chambers where bats roost overhead. The experience is both thrilling and awe-inspiring, and is accessible to strong swimmers without any diving certification.
For certified divers, Dos Ojos is a premier cavern diving destination. The visibility frequently exceeds 100 meters — some of the best in the world. Dive operators offer guided cavern dives through the system’s flooded passages, where ancient formations create an alien landscape. Multi-dive packages are available for those wanting to explore different sections of the system.
Snorkeling is excellent even without entering the cave system. Both cenotes have clear, shallow sections where you can observe fish, rock formations, and the play of light through the water. Equipment rental is available on-site.
Entry fees range from 400 to 700 MXN (approximately $22 to $38 USD) depending on the activity level. Basic snorkeling access is at the lower end, while the Bat Cave tour and guided dives cost more. The park has good facilities including changing rooms, gear rental, and a small restaurant.
Dos Ojos is located about an hour south of Playa del Carmen on the highway toward Tulum. The turnoff is well-signed, and a dirt road leads several kilometers to the cenotes. It is one of the more developed cenote parks in the area and handles large numbers of visitors efficiently. Arrive early for the best experience, as the caves are most impressive when fewer people are inside.
