Cenote Cedral, also known as the Jade Cenote, is the most accessible cenote on Cozumel island. Located in the historic Mayan town of El Cedral in the southern part of the island, this cave cenote features distinctive jade-green water colored by natural tannic acid and sits adjacent to a small Mayan pyramid that dates back centuries.
The cenote’s jade-green color is unique among the cenotes of the Riviera Maya, where most feature blue or turquoise water. The green hue comes from organic compounds leaching from the surrounding limestone and vegetation. While the water appears cloudy compared to mainland cenotes, this is entirely natural and the cenote is safe for swimming.
A mild sulfur smell is noticeable near the water, which is common in cenotes with volcanic mineral content. The smell is harmless and fades quickly once you are in the water. No sunblock of any kind is allowed to protect the delicate ecosystem.
The cenote has a cliff jumping platform that adds an element of adventure for thrill-seekers. The surrounding cave walls and overhanging rock create a dramatic setting for photography. The area is shaded and cool, providing welcome relief from the Cozumel sun.
El Cedral village itself is worth exploring. The small Mayan pyramid, the village church, and the local artisan shops give visitors a glimpse into Cozumel’s history beyond the cruise ship terminal. An entry fee of about $15 USD covers access to the village, the cenote, and the archaeological site.
Most visitors combine Cenote Cedral with a Cozumel ATV tour that covers the southern part of the island. These tours typically include the cenote stop, beach time, and a ride through the jungle. Packages run $60 to $100 USD per person with pickup from the ferry terminal or cruise port.
To visit independently, rent a car or scooter from downtown San Miguel and drive south about 30 minutes. The cenote is well-signed within the El Cedral area. It pairs well with a visit to Playa Palancar or the southern beach clubs for a full day of exploring Cozumel’s quieter side.
