A wide open cenote near Tulum once used by taxi drivers to wash their cars. Known for spectacular underwater lily pads and visibility that reaches over 100 feet. A favorite of underwater photographers.

Cenote Car Wash, officially known as Aktun Ha, is a wide open-air cenote near Tulum that has earned cult status among underwater photographers and divers. The quirky name comes from the cenote’s history as a spot where local taxi drivers once washed their vehicles. Today, it is one of the most visually stunning diving sites in the Riviera Maya.

The cenote’s claim to fame is its underwater lily pad garden. During the rainy season from June through October, aquatic plants grow thick on the surface and their roots descend into the clear water, creating a magical underwater forest effect. Sunlight filtering through the lily pads casts dancing patterns on the bottom, producing images that rival anything you would see in a National Geographic feature.

Visibility at Car Wash routinely exceeds 30 meters, and during the dry season the water is so clear it feels like swimming through air. The cenote is about 15 meters deep at its center, with gently sloping sides that provide comfortable entry for swimmers of all levels. The bottom features interesting limestone formations and fallen branches that create habitat for small fish.

Diving here is exceptional. The cenote connects to an underground cave system, and certified cavern divers can explore passages decorated with stalactites. The open cenote itself provides one of the best open-water dive experiences in the area, with the lily pad canopy overhead creating unique photo opportunities.

Entry costs 200 to 300 MXN (approximately $11 to $16 USD). The site has basic facilities — a small palapa for shade, limited parking, and no food service. Biodegradable sunscreen is mandatory, as chemical sunscreens damage the delicate ecosystem that makes this cenote special.

Cenote Car Wash is located on the road from Tulum toward Cobá, about an hour south of Playa del Carmen. It pairs well with nearby Gran Cenote for a full morning of cenote exploration. For the best lily pad photos, visit during the rainy season and dive in the late morning when the sun is high enough to illuminate the underwater canopy.
