Isla Mujeres is a small Caribbean island just off the coast of Cancún that offers some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Mexico. While it requires a bit more travel from Playa del Carmen than other day trips, the reward is Playa Norte — consistently ranked among the top 10 beaches in the world for its powder-white sand and impossibly turquoise water.
Getting to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen involves two legs. First, you travel north to Cancún (about 1 hour by bus or car), then catch the Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juarez (about 20 minutes). The entire journey takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Many tour operators offer packages from Playa del Carmen that include round-trip transportation, the ferry, and activities on the island.
Playa Norte is the star attraction and the reason most people visit. This north-facing beach has calm, shallow water that stays waist-deep for 50 meters out, making it perfect for families and non-swimmers. Beach clubs line the shore offering lounge chairs, food, and drinks for a day fee. If you prefer a quieter spot, walk to the western end of Playa Norte where the crowds thin out.
Beyond the beach, the island is small enough to explore by golf cart in a few hours. Rent one for about $40 to $60 USD per day and drive the coastal road south to Punta Sur, the dramatic cliffside point at the southern tip of the island. Here you will find the Ixchel temple ruins, a sculpture garden, and panoramic views of the Caribbean.
Snorkeling is excellent around Isla Mujeres. The MUSA Underwater Museum features over 500 submerged sculptures designed to promote coral growth. Many catamaran tours include a MUSA snorkeling stop along with an open bar and music. These party-style tours run $100 to $142 USD and are popular with younger travelers and groups.
The downtown area of Isla Mujeres is charming and walkable, with colorful buildings, seafood restaurants, and small shops. Try the grilled fish tacos at any beachfront restaurant — the seafood here is some of the freshest you will find in the region.
For budget travelers, the DIY approach works well. Take the ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Cancún ($5 USD), taxi to Puerto Juarez ($3 USD), and catch the Ultramar ferry ($15 USD round trip). Total transit cost is under $25 USD per person. On the island, skip the golf cart and rent a bicycle for $10 USD.
Isla Mujeres is best visited on weekdays when the cruise ship crowds are thinner. Arrive on the earliest ferry possible to maximize your beach time before the afternoon return journey.
