Playa del Carmen Nightlife — What to Expect
Playa del Carmen has one of the best nightlife scenes on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Whether you're looking for a chill rooftop cocktail, a beachfront bar with live music, a mezcal tasting, or a full-on dance club, there's something for every mood and budget.
The nightlife here divides roughly into two worlds: the tourist-oriented 5th Avenue strip (loud, flashy, cover charges) and the more local off-5th scene (creative cocktails, better prices, actual regulars). This guide covers both, organized by vibe so you can find exactly what you're in the mood for.
Rooftop Bars & Cocktail Lounges
For a more sophisticated night out with great views and craft cocktails:
Thompson Rooftop (The Fives Downtown Hotel area)
Consistently recommended by the expat community. As one local put it: "The Thompson above Harry's usually has no cover and is a gorgeous view and very chill." Great cocktails, stylish atmosphere, and sunset views that are hard to beat. Drinks are on the pricier side ($200-350 pesos for cocktails) but the ambiance justifies it.
- Location: Between 5th Ave and the beach, near Constituyentes
- Price level: $$$
- Best for: Date nights, sunset drinks, impressing visitors
- Best nights: Any night — weekends have more energy, weekdays are more intimate
The Fives Rooftop
"The Fives rooftop buffet is phenomenal" — a community favorite for their brunch events and evening cocktails. Upscale hotel rooftop with pool access sometimes available to non-guests for drinks.
- Location: The Fives Downtown Hotel
- Price level: $$$
- Best for: Rooftop vibes, pool + drinks combo
IT Rooftop
Sleek, modern rooftop bar with views of 5th Avenue from above. Good DJ sets on weekends. Known for creative cocktail presentations and a club-like atmosphere without the 5th Avenue chaos at street level.
- Location: Near 5th Ave and Calle 12
- Price level: $$$
- Best for: Pre-club drinks, groups, Instagram photos
Beach Bars & Chill Spots
Zenzi
A Playa institution. Zenzi is right on the beach with live music, great food, and a laid-back vibe that works from morning coffee through late-night drinks. The community raves about their Sunday BBQ buffet: "Zenzi has a BBQ buffet every Sunday from 2-6, $260 pesos."
- Location: Beachfront near Calle 10
- Price level: $$
- Music: Live bands, acoustic sets, jazz, reggae
- Best for: Beach drinks, live music, Sunday BBQ, casual dates
- Best nights: Sunday BBQ, weekday evenings for live music
Mvngata
A community favorite: "My favorite: Mvngata" — this beachfront spot offers a more curated, boutique-beach-club feel with quality cocktails and good food. Less touristy than many beach bars.
- Location: Beach zone
- Price level: $$-$$$
- Best for: Stylish beach hangs, sunset cocktails
Fah
Mentioned alongside Zenzi as a go-to by locals: "Zenzi or Fah" for food and drinks. Great beach location with a menu that goes beyond typical bar food.
Expat Hangouts & Social Bars
Alive Bar
As one long-time expat described it: "Alive has moved into that location. It's a great bar/hangout for expats. Go on an afternoon when they have live music. Happy hour beer prices at 35 pesos." This is where you'll meet the local expat community over cheap beers and good conversations.
- Location: Off 5th Avenue (check current location with community groups)
- Price level: $
- Best for: Meeting other expats, cheap drinks, live music afternoons
- Vibe: Casual, friendly, regular crowd
La Bodeguita del Medio
Cuban-inspired bar with mojitos, live salsa music, and dancing. It's on 5th Avenue but feels more authentic than most tourist spots. Great if you want to dance without the nightclub scene.
- Location: 5th Avenue
- Price level: $$
- Music: Live Cuban/salsa bands
- Best for: Salsa dancing, mojitos, couples
The Admiral
One community member described their boozy brunch: "I like The Admiral boozy brunch Saturdays but it's a sports bar atmosphere." Good for watching games, pub grub, and a more American-style bar experience.
- Location: Off 5th Avenue
- Price level: $$
- Best for: Sports, weekend brunch, casual drinks
Mezcalerias & Craft Cocktail Bars
La Perla Pixan Cuisine & Mezcal Store
Oaxacan-inspired mezcal bar with an extensive collection of artisanal mezcals. The food is equally impressive — one community member noted: "La Perla has crickets, they are good" (chapulines — a traditional Oaxacan snack). Great for a unique culinary and drinking experience.
- Location: Between 5th and 10th Avenues
- Price level: $$-$$$
- Best for: Mezcal exploration, Oaxacan cuisine, adventurous eaters
Inti
Mentioned by locals as a solid middle-ground option: "Depends on your budget but some middle would be Inti or even Zenzi." Good cocktails in a relaxed setting without the premium price tag of rooftop bars.
Dance Clubs & Late Night
For those nights when you want to dance until sunrise:
Coco Bongo
The most famous club in the Riviera Maya. Coco Bongo is a massive entertainment venue combining a nightclub with acrobatic shows (think Cirque du Soleil meets a nightclub). Cover is steep ($60-100 USD for open bar packages), but it's a bucket-list experience.
- Location: 12th Street, near 10th Avenue
- Price level: $$$$
- Music: Mixed — EDM, pop, Latin, live performances
- Best nights: Thursday-Saturday
- Best for: Once-in-a-lifetime experience, groups, celebrations
Mandala
One of 5th Avenue's mega-clubs. Multiple levels, mainstream music, and a spring-break energy. Popular with younger tourists. Cover charges vary ($30-60 USD with open bar).
- Location: 5th Avenue near 12th Street
- Price level: $$$
- Music: EDM, reggaeton, pop
- Best nights: Friday-Saturday
Club District (12th Street)
The main club area is concentrated around Calle 12 between 5th and 10th Avenues. Several clubs line this strip, and promoters will try to lure you in with drink deals. Compare offers and check reviews before committing to a cover charge.
Live Music Venues
- Zenzi — The most consistent live music schedule in Playa. Jazz, reggae, rock, acoustic sets throughout the week.
- La Bodeguita del Medio — Live Cuban/salsa bands nightly
- Various 5th Avenue spots — Rotating live music, often acoustic duos or solo guitarists at restaurant-bars
- Alive — Afternoon live music sessions popular with expats
Nightlife Safety Tips
From our safety guide and community experience:
- Watch your drinks. Drink spiking is rare but happens. Keep your drink in your hand and don't accept drinks from strangers.
- Stick to well-lit streets. After midnight, use main streets (5th Ave, 10th Ave, 12th Street) rather than dark side streets.
- Use inDrive to get home. Much safer and cheaper than walking long distances at 3 AM or negotiating with taxi drivers.
- Know the 5th Avenue hustle. As one expat warned: "They'll target men coming home late at night from the clubs walking down 10th, especially." Stay aware of your surroundings and walk with purpose.
- Don't flash cash or expensive items. Leave the fancy watch at home.
- Set a budget. Drinks flow easily in the tropical heat. Decide your limit before going out.
